Dr. D’Urso has consulted in the three major private hospital systems in New Jersey (Hackensack University Healthcare, Atlantic Health and Saint Barnabas/Robert Wood Johnson Healthcare systems) developing clinical services for children who are victims of child abuse and neglect. He was appointed as Section Chief and Supervising Psychologist at the Audrey Hepburn Children’s House where he designed and directed a post-doctoral fellowship in forensic psychology for seven years. He held appointments as Clinical Director at the Metropolitan Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Newark and the Family Enrichment Program at Morristown Hospital.

 

He has been appointed for eighteen years by multiple governors to chair prestigious child welfare reform panels. Dr. D’Urso served as the Chair of the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Child Welfare, generally regarded as the most comprehensive assessment for child welfare reform in New Jersey. Dr. D’Urso served as Chair of the Child Fatality and Near Fatality Review Board, a position he held for fourteen years. He was a member of the New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect for eighteen years. 

He has functioned as a forensic and clinical psychologist for the last thirty years. He is cited in six Supreme Court cases and numerous Appellate Court opinions in the area of sexual assault and syndrome testimony. He has designed multi-disciplinary case management teams for child victims of crime currently implemented in each of the twenty-one counties in New Jersey. He co-founded Finding Words/Child First – New Jersey, the second certified forensic interviewing academy in the United States by the National Child Protection and Training Center. Finding Words/Child First – New Jersey trains a semi-structured child interview protocol adopted by all twenty-one counties in New Jersey as the sole forensic interviewing method with child victims.

 

Dr. D’Urso has taught at Montclair State University since 1994 in the Department of Psychology Child/Clinical Programs specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology, Forensic Psychology and School-Based Consultation. He is jointly appointed to the Department of Social Work and Child advocacy and Policy. He has provided case centered supervision for MSU graduate students in the School Psychology and Learning Disability Teacher Consultant programs at the Psychological Services Center. He previously taught as a Visiting Clinical Professor from 1987 to 1994 at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University offering courses in Clinical Supervision, Children and the Law and School Based Consultation.
