Therapeutic

Services

PsychInLawNJ clinicians have advanced training and expertise in treating children and adolescents with a history of child maltreatment, including sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and neglect.  When appropriate, non-offending supportive parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate in treatment.

Services offered also include those for youth with histories of sexually offending behavior, aggressive and antisocial conduct problems, and emotional dysregulation that interferes with peer and adult relationships, school achievement, and placement.

Clinical psychologists of PsychInLawNJ provide evidenced-based therapeutic interventions using an approach characterized by a sensitivity to the needs of individual clients and their level of motivation for change; a focus on attainment of established goals; and a highly collaborative therapeutic relationship.

  • Self-referred Treatment
    • Individual Therapy for Children and Adolescents
      • Certain behavioral, emotional, and psychological difficulties can be addressed through one-on-one psychotherapy (“talk therapy”). In a collaborative approach with the clinician, children and adolescents can work to eliminate or manage symptoms or issues which negatively impact their well-being.  Examples include post-traumatic stress, conduct problems, interpersonal difficulties, emotional dysregulation, depression, and anxiety. With children and adolescents, parent/caregiver and school consultation is often required to develop social, emotional, and behavioral controls in order to foster and maintain positive change.

    • Family Therapy
      • The premise of family therapy is that the health and functioning of the family unit is dependent on dynamics of the individuals in the group. Therapists work with the family to identify maladaptive patterns of relating to one another that underlies current dysfunction and stress. Improved individual and family functioning is obtained through enhancing communication skills, improving problem-solving, and establishing healthy boundaries.

  • Court-Mandated Treatment
    • In certain instances individuals may be referred for treatment by the court system. Treatment may be required as a part of plea agreements or post-adjudication determinations. With appropriate consent PsychinlawNJ clinicians will provide treatment progress reports to courts referral sources that are involved in the care and custody of child and adolescent clients.

  • School-Mandated Treatment
    • Schools may refer children and adolescents for treatment services as a condition of their continued enrollment or maintainance in their educational program. With appropriate consent PsychinlawNJ clinicians will seek a collborate relationship with the school and provide treatment progress reports to appropriate school personnel.
